Our History

Since 1952

Woodrow and Jessie Selby began their business in September 1952 working out of their home in Pocomoke City, MD. Woodrow had previously worked for a local sign company. He bought an old sedan delivery truck, a few tools and called his new company Selby Neon Signs, specializing in neon repairs. In 1957, Woody and Jessie bought a piece of property, built a cinder-block building with an apartment upstairs, bought a hand-operated crane truck and changed the name of the company to Selby Sign Company.

By the 1960's, the sign business began to change. Neon signs were going out of fashion and plastic signs were all the rage. Nearby Ocean City, Maryland was experiencing tremendous growth and that is where Woody focused his attention. As the demand for large, internally-lighted signs grew, the facility and staff in Pocomoke were expanded, and equipment was added. The company was incorporated in 1965 under the name Selby Sign Company, Inc.

Woodrow and Jessie Selby's two sons, Steve and David, were raised learning the sign trade. When Woody passed away in 1983, they continued to run the business with Jessie as president. Throughout the 80's and 90's, Selby Sign Company expanded its products and services to keep up with the tremendous changes in the sign industry. Computer-aided design and graphics, a CAD-CAM router system, a computer break, a diverse fleet of trucks and a well-trained staff gave Selby Sign Company an edge on the competition and its territory expanded to cover the entire Delmarva Peninsula and beyond.

In 2004, Jessie stepped down and David became president of the company, and Steve, vice-president. There is currently a staff of 25, and many key employees have been with the company thirty years or more. The Selby family and employees look forward to many more years of producing quality sign products for businesses on the Eastern Shore. A lot of things have changed since 1952, but not Selby Sign Company's commitment to quality. That is why our company motto is "A Sign of Excellence".
